The short answer
Store catio kits we saw listed on Oct 14, 2026 ran from $124.99 to $1,699.00. Most under $300 are light frames with fabric or tarp roofs. A DIY walk-in from our plans costs $943 to $1,850 in materials, more than the cheap kits and far less than a custom-built catio, which builders put at $4,000 and up.
Is a catio kit cheaper than building one? The honest answer has two halves. Light store kits cost less than any catio you can build from lumber and welded wire. A catio of the same size and strength as a solid DIY build, bought as a kit or built by a company, costs a great deal more. This guide puts real numbers on both halves: the catio kit prices we saw listed in October 2026, the priced materials of our own designs, and what builders publish for custom work.
What Catio Kits Cost
We saved the Google Shopping listings that appeared in the US search results for “catio”, “catio kit” and “outdoor cat enclosure” on Oct 14, 2026. Here are 12 of them, from the smallest to the largest:

Three groups stand out. Window box kits sat around $124.99 to $160.99. Small metal or wooden enclosures with fabric or tarp roofs sat between about $190 and $280. Larger wooden walk-in runs and premium steel or net systems went from $479.00 to $1,699.00.
What the listings do not tell you
A kit listing gives a price and a photo. It rarely gives what decides whether a catio holds a cat and lasts: the mesh type and gauge, the size of the openings, the roof’s snow or wind rating, and how the frame is fastened down. Before you buy, look for those four things in the product details. If they are not there, ask the seller.
What a DIY Catio Costs
Our designer prices every line of the shopping list at a named store. These are the totals for our nine free designs, with the labor range if you hire the build out:
| Design | Floor | Cats | Materials | Build time | Labor if hired |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Window box catio | 5.3 sq ft | perch | $433.05 | 8 to 13 h | $800 to $2,600 |
| 6' x 4' lean-to catio | 24 sq ft | 1 | $903.75 | 13 to 20.5 h | $1,300 to $4,100 |
| 8' x 5' lean-to catio | 40 sq ft | 1 | $1,053.83 | 15.5 to 25 h | $1,550 to $5,000 |
| 12' x 6' lean-to catio | 72 sq ft | 3 | $1,276.36 | 19 to 30 h | $1,900 to $6,000 |
| Small catio: 6' x 4' freestanding | 24 sq ft | 1 | $943.47 | 15 to 24 h | $1,500 to $4,800 |
| 6' x 6' freestanding catio | 36 sq ft | 1 | $996.45 | 17.5 to 27.5 h | $1,750 to $5,500 |
| 8' x 6' freestanding catio | 48 sq ft | 2 | $1,132.11 | 18.5 to 29.5 h | $1,850 to $5,900 |
| 10' x 8' freestanding catio | 80 sq ft | 3 | $1,564.70 | 24 to 38 h | $2,400 to $7,600 |
| Large catio: 12' x 10' freestanding | 120 sq ft | 5 | $1,850.11 | 28 to 44 h | $2,800 to $8,800 |
The cheapest DIY catio is the window box at $433.05. The smallest walk-in, the 6x4 freestanding, is $943.47, and the 8x6 for two cats is $1,132.11. These are materials only, before tax, at shelf prices we read in October 2026. The catio cost calculator shows every line.
Why a DIY catio costs more than a cheap kit
The money goes into the parts a light kit does not have. On the 8x6, the welded wire alone is $251.96: 1 x 2 in openings, 16 gauge, galvanized, inside the 2 in (50 mm) largest opening Animal Welfare Victoria1 recommends for cat enclosures. The polycarbonate roof is $193.44, on purlins sized for 30 psf of snow. The stainless screws and washers that hold the mesh every 6 in, the hurricane ties on the purlins and the shelf brackets come to $390.15.

Kit vs DIY, Size for Size
Comparing a $189.98 kit to a $1,132 DIY catio is comparing different things. Here is the comparison by what you are actually buying.
Window box: close call
A store window box kit costs $124.99 to $160.99. Our window box plan costs $433.05 in materials, most of it in the 2x8 ledger, the lag screws into the house framing, the roof and the braces. The kit wins on price. The DIY box wins on fit: it is sized to your window, fastened to the house framing, and checked against the bedroom escape window rule (IRC2 2021 R310).
Small catio for one or two cats: kit is cheaper, DIY is stronger
Kits in the $190 to $280 range are often light frames with fabric or tarp roofs. A DIY 6x4 at $943.47 or 6x6 at $996.45 is a walk-in with a 2x4 frame, welded wire and a polycarbonate roof. If you need a catio for a summer on a covered patio, a kit can be the right call. If it stands in the open all year, in snow or near coyotes, the DIY build is what the welfare guides describe: Humane World for Animals3 asks for a roof that can handle your local snow and notes that large predators call for an extremely sturdy build.
Walk-in for several cats: DIY is far cheaper
At the size of a real walk-in for three to five cats, the comparison flips. Our 10x8 is $1,564.70 and the 12x10 $1,850.11 in materials. The steel run in our list was $1,699.00. Custom-built catios cost more again: The Catio Company, a catio builder, puts the total professional cost at “$4,000-$10,000+ for a custom-built catio” (budget breakdown, updated Oct 13, 2025), and The Cattopia writes that “most companies charge anywhere from $3,000 to $20,000+” (Feb 3, 2025). Even hiring a carpenter to build our 12x10 adds $2,800 to $8,800 in labor, by our build time and published hourly rates.

What You Get With DIY That a Kit Cannot Give
A size that fits your space
A kit comes in its sizes. A DIY catio is the size of your window, your wall or your patio, down to the half inch. Our designer takes any width from 3 to 20 ft and redoes the framing, the mesh rolls and the roof for it.
Checks for your cats and your climate
The designer checks floor space per cat (21.5 sq ft, after Animal Welfare Victoria1), height, shelves, gaps, mesh, shade and the roof under the snow load you pick. A kit listing tells you none of that.
Upgrades a kit rarely offers
A double-door airlock, which the shelter vets (ASV 2022) recommend for every enclosed outdoor space, adds $253.70 to the 8x6; it is a recommended additional feature, not included in our 8x6 plan unless you turn it on. A 6 ft tunnel to the house adds $116.91. A dig-proof mesh apron for a catio on the lawn adds $160.74.

What a Kit Gets Right
Kits have real advantages, and they are worth saying. A kit arrives with every part cut and every hole drilled, and it goes up in hours, not days. Many kits are portable: you can take them with you when you move, which matters to renters. And for a cat who only goes out on sunny afternoons under supervision, a light enclosure may be all you need.
Check before you build
Before you buy a kit
Find the mesh type and gauge in the listing (welded wire or hardware cloth, not chicken wire or plastic netting), the floor area divided by the number of cats (21.5 sq ft each is our green line), what the roof is made of, and whether the door lets you reach every corner to clean.
Cost per Square Foot
Price per square foot is the fairest way to compare a kit with a build, when the listing gives the size. One of the wooden walk-in kits in our list states its floor: 57.2 sq ft for $479.00, about $8.37 per sq ft. Our designs, in materials only:
| Design | Floor | Materials | Per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6x4 freestanding | 24 sq ft | $943.47 | $39.31 |
| 8x6 freestanding | 48 sq ft | $1,132.11 | $23.59 |
| 10x8 freestanding | 80 sq ft | $1,564.70 | $19.56 |
| 12x10 freestanding | 120 sq ft | $1,850.11 | $15.42 |
Per square foot, that kit is cheaper than any of our builds. What the extra buys in a DIY catio is listed above: welded wire at a known gauge, a polycarbonate roof on purlins sized for snow, stainless fasteners every 6 in, and a height of 80 in you can walk into. The cost per square foot also falls as the catio grows, because the door, the roof edge and the corners cost the same on a big catio as on a small one.
The Costs You Do Not See on the Price Tag
For a DIY catio
Our totals are materials before tax. Add sales tax, delivery if you do not have a truck, and any tools you do not own: a miter or circular saw, a drill and an impact driver, aviation snips, a level and a ladder. Add your time too: two people take 18.5 to 29.5 hours for the 8x6, by our estimate, with everything on site. If you would rather hire a carpenter, the labor ranges in the table above are the published hourly rates times those hours.
For a kit
Kits carry their own extras: shipping on the heavier ones, a few hours of assembly, anchors or weights to keep a light enclosure from moving in the wind, and replacement covers when a fabric roof wears out in the sun. Prices also move: a listing we saved can be on sale one week and full price the next, so check the price on the day you buy.
How Many Cats Does a Kit Hold?
A kit listing rarely says. Use the 21.5 sq ft per cat green line from our size calculator: divide the floor area by 21.5 and round down. The wooden walk-in kit above, at 57.2 sq ft, holds two cats by that rule, which makes it about $239.50 per cat. Our 8x6 is also a two-cat catio, at 48 sq ft of floor for $1,132.11 in materials. Kits at $190 to $280 usually give 10 to 20 sq ft, which is room for one cat to sit, not to walk. The catio size calculator does the arithmetic for your cats.
Kit Brands and Stores People Search For
Related searches for “catio kit” name Costco, Home Depot, Amazon and Kitty City, and also window catio kits and balcony kits. We did not price those stores’ kits: the listings in this guide are the ones we saved on Oct 14, 2026, and a store kit can change price or sell out. The four checks in the callout above apply to every one of them: mesh type and gauge, floor area per cat, roof material and door reach. A balcony kit also has to match your railing, and our balcony catio guide covers that.
How Long Can a Cat Stay in a Catio?
People ask how long they can leave a cat in a catio. No welfare source we read gives a number of hours, so we do not give one. What they describe is supervised, time-limited access: Humane World for Animals3 asks you to supervise the cats, and Best Friends4 advises a way back to a heated room and never leaving a cat in an isolated enclosure in severe cold. A catio kit or a DIY build needs shade, water and a door the cat can use to come in.

Upgrading a Kit Instead
If you already own a kit, or want one for its speed, two upgrades close most of the gap. First, the mesh: screw galvanized welded wire or 1/2 in hardware cloth over the kit’s netting or light wire, on the outside, with washers every 6 in; the best wire for a catio guide covers the fixing. Second, the roof: a fabric roof can be replaced with corrugated polycarbonate on purlins, with at least 1-1/2 in of fall per foot. Neither upgrade gives a kit a size it does not have.
Where a Builder’s Plan Fits
A free design from our catio plans gives you the size, the checks and the priced materials. The builder’s plan for any design you make in the designer is $29: every wall drawn stud by stud, the cut list on store board lengths, every piece of mesh placed on its roll, the roof and the door, and the build in steps. Against the price gap between a kit and a custom-built catio, the plan is a small line; against a $124.99 window box kit, it is not, and for a small window box a kit can be the better buy.
So, Build or Buy?
Buy a kit if you need a small, temporary or portable catio for one cat, in a mild climate, and you want it this weekend. Build if you want a walk-in, if you have more than two cats, if it snows where you live, or if the catio has to fit a space no kit fits. If you build, start with the catio size calculator and the guide to building a catio, and open the catio designer to price your exact design.
